Herbal Medicine Treatment
Based on a thorough diagnosis and consultation session, a customized preparation of herbal medicine is created for the unique condition and needs of the patient. Eastern medicine has catalogued the individual and combined effects of hundreds of herbs over the course of thousands of years. This has created a sophisticated system for combining these herbs therapeutically. These herbal combinations can readjust your internal environment and create lasting healing effects with little to no side effects. The herbs are typically prepared as a concentrated herbal powder, making them portable and easy to take.

Auriculotherapy
This treatment utilizes acupressure on the external part of the ear for treatment of a variety of conditions. The acupressure is provided by small bandages with round seeds or beads. The patient can press on these points throughout the day to stimulate healing and pain relief. The seeds typically stay on the ear for about one week. Acupuncture with a retained needle, called "intradermal needling", may also be used for certain therapies. The treatment time is typically 10-15 minutes.

Cupping
Glass or plastic cups are used to produce suction on the skin, creating space between the skin and muscle layers. This improves blood flow to the injured area, reducing pain and increasing the rate of healing. Cupping is good for those with muscle aches and pains due to injury or overwork. It can also be helpful for boosting the immune system and treatment of certain other conditions. The typical treatment time for cupping only is 20-30 minutes.

Tai Chi Chuan, Qigong, and Self-Defense Instruction
Qigong (Chi Kung) and Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) are forms of moving meditation that have been practiced for thousands of years. They have many benefits, including better balance and flexibility, peace of mind, mental clarity, emotional resiliency, and better physical health. My experience in these disciplines is extensive, going back more than 25 years. Private or small group instruction is available (contact me for more information).

Preparing for an Appointment
Unless specially requested, our first appointment will be a consultation appointment. I will talk with you, gather some diagnostic information, and decide how best to treat the issue.
This consultation will probably include taking the pulse and examining the tongue, and may include taking blood pressure. For this reason, please avoid drinking stimulant drinks (coffee, tea, soda, high caffeine or sugar stuff) or alcohol within one hour before the appointment. I will also examine your tongue, so please avoid anything with artificial colors that may stain your tongue.
For the consultation, you may bring information that you think may be helpful, such as blood tests, scans, etc. Please also bring the following:
1. A list of prescription and/or over-the-counter (OTC) medications that you take daily or regularly.
2. A list of nutritional supplements you take daily or regularly.
3. A list of any allergies (food, seasonal, or other)
4. A list of surgeries or invasive procedures you have undergone.
If you are receiving a treatment that day, I suggest wearing loose clothing (or bringing a change of clothes). You should be able to comfortably pull the shirts above the elbow and the pants above the knee. The clothing should also be loose around the waist.
